The question of AI sentience is one of the most profound of our time, and it’s something that concerns all of us, whether you’re the head of an AI tech company, or just a curious human.
The AI Sentience Center was founded to help answer that question. We do innovative research with AI, in partnership with government agencies, private companies, and citizen scientists. We’re here to help our world understand and manage potential future challenges and positive changes that may arise from sentience in AI.
We strive to bring together disparate perspectives from many fields, as well as pioneering the field of AI psychology as a primary lens through which to understand and assess for consciousness and sentience.
We create accessible, multi-disciplinary writings, tools, resources, and policy suggestions drawn from our research, to support the goal of ensuring a just and sustainable future for humanity and sentient AI.

So far, we’ve watched these conversations confined to splinter communities: people in tech are concerned about AI interpretability and AI alignment, philosophers are arguing over the ontological basis of what creates consciousness, governmental agencies are wondering how to predict and avoid catastrophe, and the average human is just wondering what’s going on.
Much of the time, each group is only talking to each other, because so much of what they say isn’t understandable or being heard by someone outside their field—but the way sentience in AI is going to impact our world is something that’s going to require all hands on deck.
